NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- At least 68 people, including 30 children, were killed Sunday when pilgrims stampeded at a mountaintop Hindu temple in northern India, police said.
The devotees were attending a nine-day religious festival at the Naina Devi Temple in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh state, said Bilaspur deputy police chief C.P. Verma.
"As per our information 30 children and 38 women have been killed," he said, adding that more than 40 others were wounded.
Verma said the stampede was triggered when too many pilgrims tried to squeeze into a small area.
However, state police Chief S.R. Mardi said it was caused when a railing on the path leading up the mountain collapsed.
Verma said rescue workers used a cable car at the temple to help evacuate the injured from the mountain top.
Bilaspur is about 155 miles (250 kilometers) northeast of Indian capital, New Delhi.
